For some reason, people think that 4x4s cost a fortune to maintain and insure. It’s bizarre, because “4×4” only refers to how engine power gets distributed! People often think of 4×4 cars as Jeeps, Range Rovers and so forth.

But there are plenty of “ordinary” cars have 4×4 powertrains, such as the Subaru Impreza. Are you planning on buying a 4×4 soon? If so, car insurance will be at the forefront of your mind when going car shopping.

Don’t panic, because it is possible to get affordable car insurance for a 4×4 vehicle! Check out these great tips to help you do so:

Make sure your driving licence is clean

Do you have penalty points or endorsements on your driving licence? Regardless of the car you want to buy, you are less likely to get cheap car insurance for your next 4×4 vehicle if your licence isn’t “clean.”

Some people don’t realise that they have to apply to have any endorsements removed from their licence. Have you got penalty points on your driving licence? Find out if you can get them removed. You may have to pay a fee to have them removed.

How safe is your home?

If you are planning on buying a 4×4, the car you buy could be a higher insurance risk because of its value. Tom from Saxton 4×4 once told me that organised car thieves target special edition and top of the range 4×4 models. The reason for that is simple: they are worth more than “standard” models.

I recommend making sure that your new pride and joy will be safe and secure at your home. There are many ways that you can do this:

  • Install security gates around your home’s boundaries;
  • Install security lighting and CCTV cameras as visible deterrents;
  • Don’t leave your car keys by the front door;
  • Park your car in your garage, if you have one.

A determined thief will always find a way of stealing a car. But if you can make their life hard, they are more likely to find easier prey.

Shop around

It doesn’t pay to stick with one insurance company for many years. These days, there is no such thing as loyalty when it comes to car insurance. You should take the time to get quotes from many different insurance companies.

In the UK, there are insurance comparison websites such as MoneySupermarket and comparethemarket.com. They get many quotes at the same time, so that you don’t have to fill in hundreds of online quote forms online!

Sign up to an owner’s club

Another way of getting cheap 4×4 insurance is to sign up with an owner’s club. To be honest, I recommend you sign up to them. That is because you can learn a lot about your car and save cash at the same time.

Owner’s clubs are often affiliated with insurance companies. In other words, you can get discounts from certain insurance companies just because you are a club member! A quick Google search will reveal the best car clubs for your make and model.
