Ng Yu Zhi, 37, is on trial for 42 charges of fraudulent trading, cheating, forgery, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering, following allegations that he swindled 947 victims of nearly S$1.5 billion. His spending habits on luxury vehicles have been a significant aspect of the case, with evidence suggesting that he bought several high-end cars for his girlfriend and others, with at least three other cars purchased around the same period. The purchases totalled nearly S$1 million. The High Court heard testimony from motor-vehicle dealers on Tuesday, April 15, about Ng’s purchases of luxury vehicles for one of his girlfriends, Qian Yijun, and two men, whose relationship to him remained unmentioned in court. Qian was identified as one of Ng’s girlfriends on April 11, by another motor dealer, Michael Ho of F1 Autos. Ng bought Qian a two-door, four-litre matte grey Mercedes Benz AMG GT, a sport model, for S$550,000 on June 24, 2020, according to Ho’s testimony. Ng bought another Mercedes Benz, this time a vintage vehicle with an engine capacity of 2.8 litres, for S$288,000 in December 2020, and transferred ownership of it to Qian. This purchase was made six months after he bought Qian the other Mercedes Benz. The rare vintage Mercedes Benz 280 was estimated to be one of only 10 to 20 vehicles left in Singapore, and its first registration date overseas was August 1, 1970. Ng was also buying luxury vehicles from another trader, Lim Ah Poh, chief executive of Motor-Way Credit. He bought a used, top-of-the-range Bentley Mulsanne with an engine capacity of 6,752 cc for S$490,000 in December 2019, which was partially funded by the trade-in of his Lamborghini Aventador LP750-Superveloce. Ng’s spending on luxury vehicles continued with the purchase of two vehicles on September 4, 2020 – an Aston Martin Rapide 6.0 ABS D/AB 2WD for S$325,000, and a Mercedes Benz E200 AVG Auto for S$183,000. The Aston Martin was transferred to Ng Siew Thiam, and the Mercedes Benz E200 was registered under Chua Eng Kiam. The witness did not provide details on how the recipients of these cars were related to Ng. Ng’s total spending on luxury vehicles was over S$21 million, with more than 20 cars purchased. Ng Yu Zhi’s alleged nickel fraud case has exposed his lavish spending habits on luxury vehicles, which have been a significant aspect of the case. Some key points to note are:
