Tata Motors is the largest automobile manufacturer in India. They produce not only passenger cars, but also light and heavy commercial vehicles. The number of Tata vehicles in India is so huge that there is no road in the country on which a Tata Vehicle cannot be seen.
There are many best-selling cars from Tata Motors. The lowest priced car in the world is the Tata Nano. It has been adjudged a best seller as many people preferred to buy the small car that is big on savings and fuel economy. Since the Nano offers the benefits of small size and fuel efficiency, many people have opted to buy this small wonder. Nano diesel was also supposed to make its way into the Indian market, but of late, it is known that the Tatas have abandoned that project.
Tata Indica is perhaps the first indigenously developed Indian car from the Tatas. It has been a consistent best-seller for Tata in the hatchback segment. Likewise, the small cars like Vista and Bolt have also done well.
In the sedan and compact sedan segments, the Indigo, Zest and Manza have done very well. Tata Motors assessed the preferences of the customers very well and as most of the cars from Tata came with a diesel option, these cars were instant hits among the buyers. Above all, the trust and value associated with the ‘Tata’ brand name also helped the carmaker to do good business in India.
However, it is in the SUV segment that the Tata cars played a major role. The compact SUVs like Sumo, Sumo Grande, Safari and the premium car Xenon, all were match winners. There was a time, before the market was flooded with SUVs, when a sturdy utility car meant a Tata Sumo or a Safari.
Tata Motors were far ahead the times when they introduced the crossover SUVs in India. As the concept was new in India, it did not find many takers initially. However, once the idea caught on, the Aria was also favoured by the Indian car buyers. Even so, it did not enjoy a grand success like that of the Nano.
To sum up, it can be said that the Tata cars in the compact, hatchback, sedan and SUV segments have done extremely well. Only the crossover SUV segment failed to take off as per expectations.
