Eco-friendly vehicles take center stage in Qatar’s inaugural Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific event.
The event, which is part of the Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific series, will take place from March 15 to 17, 2019, at the Qatar International Exhibition Centre.
The Inaugural Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific
The inaugural Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific is a highly anticipated event that brings together students from various countries to showcase their innovative and eco-friendly vehicle designs. The event aims to promote sustainability and environmental awareness among the young participants, while also encouraging them to think creatively and develop innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions.
The Competition Format
The competition format for the Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific is designed to test the students’ skills and knowledge in designing and building eco-friendly vehicles. The event features three categories: the Open Class, the Formula Student Asia-Pacific, and the Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific Challenge. Each category has its own set of rules and regulations, but the common goal is to achieve the lowest fuel consumption and emissions. The Open Class category is open to all students, regardless of their university affiliation or location. The Formula Student Asia-Pacific category is designed for students who are currently enrolled in a university program and are competing in the Formula Student Asia-Pacific competition. The Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific Challenge category is a special challenge for students who have not participated in the Formula Student Asia-Pacific competition.
The Challenges and Rules
The challenges and rules for the Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific are designed to test the students’ creativity, innovation, and problem-solving skills. Some of the key challenges and rules include:
The Origins of Shell Eco-marathon
The Shell Eco-marathon programme was first launched in 2006 by Shell, a multinational oil and gas company, with the goal of promoting sustainable mobility and reducing carbon emissions. The programme was initially designed to encourage students to develop innovative solutions for energy-efficient transportation. Since its inception, the programme has grown to become a global initiative, with events taking place in over 20 countries worldwide.
The Competition Format
The Shell Eco-marathon competition is structured around a series of regional and global events. Student teams from around the world design, build, and test their energy-efficient vehicles, which are then evaluated based on their performance and environmental impact. The competition is open to students of all ages and backgrounds, with teams competing in various categories, including:
The Vehicle Design Challenge
The vehicle design challenge is a critical component of the Shell Eco-marathon competition. Teams are required to design and manufacture a vehicle that is capable of achieving a minimum average speed of 100 km/h while consuming the least amount of energy.
Through Shell Eco-marathon, Shell aims to inspire and support the next generation of engineers, scientists, and innovators in their pursuit of sustainable solutions. More information is available at www.shellecomarathon.com.
