About AutosHype
AutosHype is an independent, advertising-supported site for people who drive, buy, or keep a car running — six free calculators and a set of reference guides, built around the numbers that come up most often: horsepower, tire size, depreciation, fuel economy, fuel cost, and auto-loan payments.
How the calculators are built
Every tool here runs on one named, checkable formula, not a hidden model or a lookup table of averages.
- The Horsepower Calculatoruses the standard relationship HP = torque × RPM ÷ 5252, converting in either direction and showing why a torque curve and a horsepower curve always cross at 5252 RPM.
- The Tire Size Calculator decodes a metric tire size — width, aspect ratio, rim diameter — into sidewall height, overall diameter, circumference, and revolutions per mile using standard tire geometry, then compares two sizes to estimate the speedometer error a swap would introduce.
- The Car Depreciation Calculator applies a declining-balance calculation — a starting price reduced by an annual percentage, compounded year over year — to produce a year-by-year value schedule and a total amount lost.
- The MPG Calculator divides miles driven by gallons used, then converts the result to litres per 100 km and kilometres per litre using standard metric conversion factors.
- The Fuel Cost Calculator multiplies a trip’s fuel use (distance ÷ MPG) by a pump price, then scales that per-trip figure up to an annual estimate from your yearly mileage.
- The Car Loan Calculator runs a standard loan-amortization formula against price, down payment, trade-in value, interest rate, term, and tax to produce a monthly payment, the amount financed, total interest, and total cost.
Where the inputs come from
None of these tools pull live data from a manufacturer, a dealer network, or a lender. The underlying formulas are public, standard conventions — the torque-to-horsepower relationship, ordinary tire geometry, compound-interest depreciation, and a standard loan-amortization formula — and the inputs (a torque figure, a tire size, a depreciation rate, an APR) are the numbers you supply, typically from a spec sheet, a dealer quote, or a loan offer. The math behind each result is worked out in full on the tool’s own page, not hidden behind the answer.
