Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) Updates

The UK government has announced updates to the Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) system, which will come into effect from April 1, 2025.

This change will affect approximately 80% of the UK’s car fleet, which comprises around 30 million vehicles. The increase in tax will generate around £5.5 billion in revenue for the government. The tax changes will take effect on April 1, 2024. The proposed tax changes are aimed at reducing carbon emissions from vehicles and tackling climate change.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the historic tax exemption, vehicles must meet specific eligibility criteria. These include:

  • Being a car built before January 1, 1985
  • Being a private vehicle, not a commercial or hire vehicle
  • Not being used for racing or other competitive purposes
  • Not being used for hire or rental purposes
  • Being a vehicle that is not being used for the purpose of carrying goods or passengers for profit
  • Application Process

Motorists must actively apply for the historic tax exemption to avoid vehicle tax. This involves submitting an application to the relevant authorities, providing documentation to support the vehicle’s eligibility, and paying the required fee.
