The Swedish car manufacturer Volvo are well-revered for their innovative technology. Everyone knows that Volvo cars are among the safest you can buy. Now they want people to see how they can push technological boundaries too!

Recently, Volvo said they are building an eco-friendly XC90 SUV. Their aim is to make it “the world’s most powerful and cleanest SUV.” Here is the lowdown on what they have to say about this exciting new model!

Launched back in 2002, the Volvo XC90 brought shockwaves to the SUV market and the motor trade. Its global sales records are a testament to its popularity and demand. The new Volvo XC90 uses what the firms dubs its “Scalable Product Architecture.”

They say it promotes improved driveability. And it includes the latest safety features and in-car technology.

Engine choice

As you can imagine, there will be many engine choices available for buyers of the new Volvo XC90. Jim from Carco Cars confirms that the new Volvo XC90 has a range of “Drive-E” petrol and diesel engine units available.

These four-cylinder engines offer “outstanding combination of performance and fuel-efficiency”. According to Volvo, they are a way of making Volvo ownership a greener experience.

Twin Engine technology

But the most-exciting development has to be with the new Volvo XC90’s “Twin Engine” technology. The top of the range model will sport the T8 Twin Engine badge. But what exactly does this mean?

Volvo have gone on record to state that it will be a plug-in hybrid, electric and high-performance SUV all rolled into one!

When you drive the new Volvo XC90, the default driving mode is hybrid. In that mode, the car will make use of a 2.0-litre turbocharged and supercharged Drive-E petrol engine. It will drive the front wheels while the rear wheels utilise an 80-brake horsepower electric motor.

The supercharger boosts the Drive-E unit’s engine power lower down the rev range. But once airflow has built up, the turbocharger will take over. The engine is a similar concept to the Volkswagen Group’s TSi engines.

Emissions

The new Volvo XC90 boasts low emissions figures of just 60 g/km. Not only will that be a selling point to eco-friendly motorists, but it’s great for company car purposes too! Volvo believes this is the first SUV on the market to offer such low emissions figures.

Electric-only mode

Driving around town only? The Volvo XC90 lets you select a pure electric mode for short-distance driving at the push of a button.

The electric-only mode is good for 25 miles, and once you run out of juice, the car will revert back to its default hybrid mode. The hybrid mode offers drivers 400 brake horsepower in that combined mode.

No compromise in interior space

Volvo says that they have discovered the secrets of maximising cabin space. Those secrets take into account the electric motor and battery technology. The XC90 uses Scalable Product Architecture and allows for hybrid technology provision.

The Swedish firm says other car makers sacrifice cabin space for electric motors and batteries.
